China’s Indonesian, russian coal imports rise

China’s imports of thermal coal from Indonesia and Russia increased in June, partially boosted by continuing government-imposed import restrictions on Australian coal. China’s imports of Indonesian coal, including non-coking bituminous, sub-bituminous and lignite, were 12.67mn t in June, according to customs data. This was up by 24pc from the same month last year. China’s receipts of Indonesian bituminous coal were 1.52mn t in June, higher by 254pc or 1.08mn t from June last year. Indonesian shipments of bituminous coal have registered consecutive rises since April, partially because restrictions on imports of Australian product since February have forced Chinese buyers to buy more Indonesian higher calorific value coal as an alternative.
