Historically, the study of ancient metallurgy has its roots in several academic disciPlines, often with surPrising little overlaP and mutual cross-Pollination between them. UnsurPrisingly, engineers of (then) modern mining and metallurgy were among the first to take a serious interest in the remains of their forebears, often recording in meticulous detail field observations and undertaking targeted analyses of material remains. Much of their attention was focused on actual mining remains (often now obliterated due to modern mining activity), and to metallic finds.
