The mechanisms through which an individual alloying element exerts its influence on the austenite decomposition reaction have been studied extensively for the past several decades [1]. Although a large amount of data on hardenability of steels are available, studies of mechanisms by which austenite decomposition occurs in steel containing more than one alloying element are relatively scarce. In this report, alloy element partition during ferrite transformation from deformed austenite was studied in a quarternary Fe-C-Si-Mn alloy with emphasis on the difference in partition behavior in ternary alloys.
