摘要

This year, the Gastrointestinal (G-I) section editors of Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care had planned to put together updates in subjects of a wide spectrum of pathogenic and clinical practice relevance in an attempt to translate basic and pathophysiological science to the day-to-day patient's care. The subjects could be divided into those related to growing health problems threatening patients' life, as the first group, which deals with the role of alcohol and G-I cancer and the possibility of dietary manipulation of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The second group provides evidence on the role of certain nutrients in improving intestinal function and the benefit of using them when trying to feed severely ill patients. Finally, a third group of reviews address the role of manipulating diet, or the responsibility of the diet in very common problems in G-I clinical practice, which although do not compromise patients' life in terms of survival, do represent a problem in their day-to-day quality of life or make invasive G-I examinations (lower G-I tract endoscopy) even more uncomfortable.
