Brazil’s Vale plans to renew licence for construction of CSU plant

Brazil’s Vale, the world’s top producer of iron ore, has requested Espirito Santo state’s environmental agency to renew its licence for construction of slab plant Companhia Siderurgica Ubu (CSU). What is at issue here is not the start of the project. “We just need to renovate the license,” a representative of Vale told Metal Expert. In 2012, the company announced that construction of CSU “was no longer among its priorities.” Vale initially planned to develop the project with China’s Baosteel, which quit the venture in 2009. Earlier it was planned to launch the 5 million tpy slabs plant in 2014. Now Vale is still looking for a financial partner for the project.
