Plants were regenerated from protoplast fusions between B. napus variety Zhong S and Xinjiang wild rape line W4296 and between Orychophragmus violaceus line O4834 and B. napus variety Zhong 821. Regenerants from the fusion of B. napus with O. violaceus had intermediate morphology and 6 flowered after 1.5-2.0 months. Many buds died before flowering and anthers yielded no pollen. Regenerants from the fusion of B. napus with Xinjiang wild rape also had intermediate morphology and flowered after 2-3 months. Petal shape was similar to that of B. napus. Fertility varied between plants and flowers and was generally low. Backcrossing to B. napus yielded abnormal seeds.
