Variability in 28 rape cultivars was investigated by means of laboratory experiments to measure hypocotyl length, and field trials conducted in Kansas, USA, in 1995 to assess seed emergence from shallow (3.2 cm) and deep (5.7 cm) sowing. Results indicated that there was genotypic variability in hypocotyl length and the mean ranged from 7.2 to 13 cm. Emergence from deep sowing was significantly lower than from shallow sowing for all genotypes tested. Hypocotyl length was significantly related to emergence from both shallow and deep sowing, and genotypes with the longest hypocotyls emerged best from sowing at either depth. The significance of these results for crop establishment in conditions of limited moisture are discussed.
