Colchitetraploidy induction in turnip (Brassica rapa L.).

This paper describes the induction of autotetraploidy in turnip [B. campestris var. rapa] cv. Rose Red (2n = 20) by treating fully grown seedlings with 0.2% colchicine solution intermittently for several days using the modified cotton swab method. As a result of primary and secondary screening, 28 out of 261 plants were confirmed to be autotetraploids. Morphological and cytological characteristics of autotetraploids are listed. It is suggested that frequency of chromocentres can be utilized as a reliable cytological criterion for the screening and confirmation of polyploidy in turnip.
