During 1992, mustard family (Brassicaceae) weeds were collected from canola [rape] fields in the inland Pacific Northwest and identified. Seeds were collected from the same populations later that season for laboratory analyses to determine oil content, fatty acid composition and glucosinolate content. Seed size and shape, and 1000-seed weight were also recorded and compared to values for canola seeds. A wide variety of weed species were found in spring canola fields. The most common mustard familyweeds were wild mustard (Brassica kaber), black mustard (B. nigra), birdsrape mustard (B. [campestris var.] rapa), tumble mustard (Sisymbrium altissimum), field pennycress (Thlaspi arvense), flixweed (Descarania [Descurainia] sophia) and shepardspurse (Capsella bursa-pastoris). A model was developed to determine how a certain level of weed seed contamination would affect the quality of canola oil.
