Androgen deprivation therapy and acute kidney injury

An observational case-control study by Dr Lapi and colleagues1 reported that androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) was associated with acute kidney injury (AKI) in men with prostate cancer. For several reasons, however, the reported link is unlikely to reflect a causal relationship. .. First, a cause-effect relationship between ADT and renal failure is biologically improbable. Acute kidney injury is not a known complication of hypogonadism in the general population and has not been reported as an adverse event in large randomized controlled trials of long-term adjuvant ADT.2,3
