INSPIRATION FOR THE CUSTOM COVERS FOR JAMA'S THEME issues comes from many sources. The cover illustrations reflect the scientific topic within the issue, at times in a stylistically objective manner, sometimes with a whimsical or symbolic twist, or with homage or allusion to famous paintings or art genre. The illustration for this theme issue on child health has drawn inspiration, in part, from the works of Norman Rockwell. Rockwell, who frequently depicted children, is-appropriately perhaps-best known as a cover illustrator, having provided paintings for the covers of the Saturday Evening Post for 47 years. Rockwell once said, "I paint life as I would like it to be.
