Over the weekend to April 4, TransCanada closed the 590K-b/d Keystone pipeline after detecting signs of a leak in the US state of South Dakota. The pipeline delivers about a quarter of the crude that is shipped into the US Midwest, but markets failed to react to closure. "It's coming at a time when there is no shortage of crude in that part of the system," said Turner Mason & Co. Executive VP John Auers. "At a different time, the impact would be much greater." The closure did force Phillips 66 to cut throughput at its 336K-b/d Wood River, Illinois refinery, and Chicago gasoline was noted rising by 2.5c/gal against NYMEX futures.
