F1 seed was produced by bud pollination following a line X tester design using 3 doubled haploid (DH) lines from B. rapa [B. campestris] turnip rape population BC86-18 (BC) and 7 from population Composite B (CB) as females and 5 DH lines from population Echo/Polar/DLY (EPD) as males. Forty-four single cross hybrids were evaluated, together with the 3 donor populations and the 15 parental DH lines, as well as the standard Tobin, at Saskatoon in 1994. The best hybrid, BC2668 X EPD2975, showed significant commercial heterosis and yielded 130% of Tobin and 189% of its mid-donor parental value. Three BC and 7 CB DH lines died due to herbicide (ethametsulfuron) application, while 5 EPD DH lines, the 3 donor populations and Tobin showed no herbicide damage, indicating possible genetic resistance. It was concluded that commercial hybrid seed production using DH lines was possible provided donors were selected for the appropriate characteristics, and that parents were chosen on the basis of pedigree or heterotic group.
