Temperature and light controlling cold acclimation of Rapid Cycling Brassica spp.

Seedlings of Brassica napus, B. nigra, B. oleracea, B. juncea, B. carinata and B. rapa [B. campestris] were grown at 25, 20, 15, 10 or 5鳦, while B. rapa seedlings were also grown at 25鳦 under an 18-h photoperiod at irradiances of 75, 150 or 250 鎚ol m-2 s-1. Leaf samples were frozen at a rate of -5鳦 h-1 to a base temperature of -5鳦. B. napus, B. nigra and B. carinata showed limited acclimatization with high levels of cellular damage, while B. rapa, B. oleracea and B. juncea showed good levels of acclimatization. Plants grown at the 2 lower irradiances showed significantly greater damage than those grown at the highest.
