Vaccines have protected millions of people from a variety of infectious diseases, but not herpes. An effective preventative vaccine has eluded scientists. GlaxoSmithKline developed the first partially effective vaccine, called Simprilix. In clinical trials, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in January 2012, 58% of participants were protected against HSV1 but only 20% against HSV2. The company announced it was dropping the product in 2010.
