Pakistan aims for - higher production of quality cotton

Besides evolving virus resistant varieties due attention is being paid on multiplication and distribution of cotton seed and the wider adoption of crop and pest management practices to regain the growth in cotton production as witnessed in 1991-92. Possibilities are being explored to promote cotton cultivation in parts of other two provinces, namely Baluchistan and NWFP where plenty of fertile lands and irrigation water is available. For the purpose, the government distributed this season a sizeablequantity of cottonseed and fertilizer free of cost among small farmers in certain potential cotton growing areas. R&D activities are also being activated in these areas. New areas being brought under cotton cultivation are thus likely to add sizably tothe national cotton production. The government has also established a Cotton Standards Institute to implement cotton standardization and grading program at the ginning stage.
