England - the challenge of change

The recent past two years have been among the most difficult for the cotton trade and the textile industry that I can remember. During that time, first as vice president and then president of the LCA, I have witnessed the on-going processes of agglomeration and amalgamation that continue to characterise this business. From the mid-1800s -- the era of John Rew's conceptualisation of the "hedge", of "arrivals" contracts, of boom and slump, the heady days of Britain's cotton textile industry, and thefounding of the LCA -- to the late 1990s, is a century and a half filled with cataclysmic change. The Port of Liverpool -- gateway to the Lancashire cotton textile industry, and driving force for the entire North-West region of England -- has witnessed more changes than His Majesty could have foreseen. And the LCA itself has undergone, and continues to undergo, change. From my perspective, during the past two years getting "stuck in" with others committed to implementing change has been both a huge challenge and a real pleasure.
