Stroke: treatment options in acute management

Stroke accounts for 9% of deaths globally and is the second most common cause of death after ischaemic heart disease1. Stroke accounts for more than 4% of direct healthcare costs, with an absolute cost of around ￡9bn in the UK2. Post-stroke complications also have substantial indirect costs relating to post-stroke dependence/disability, dementia, depression, falls, fractures and epilepsy.
