WHO DECLARES ZIKA OUTBREAK A PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the outbreak of the Zika virus, which is spreading across the Caribbean and Latin America, an international public health emergency. The WHO said on 1 February 2016 that there is an "urgent need" to coordinate an international response to the epidemic and to establish whether, as suspected, there is a link between infection during pregnancy and the development of microcephaly in newborn babies.
