STUDY METHOD AND RESULTS

Records from 40 general practices in Scotland were linked together with admissions data from national hospitals between 2006 and 2007. In the population of patients as a whole, 6 per cent were admitted to hospital during the 12 months. Patients receiving one to three medicines were used as the reference group rather than patients taking no medicines. The results were adjusted for confounding factors such as age, gender and deprivation.
