Strontium unsafe for immobile patients or those at risk of VTE

STRONTIUM ranelate (Protelos; Servier) should not be prescribed for patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE) or a history of VTE, or to patients who are temporarily or permanently immobilised, according to the European Medicines Agency. The EMA's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP), which concluded a safety review of strontium-containing products last week, says doctors should re-evaluate whether patients over 80 years of age who are at risk of VTE need to continue strontium treatment.
