Aspirin mooted to prevent VTE return

ASPIRIN can safely be used to prevent recurrence of venous thromboembolism in certain patients after stopping anticoagulation therapy, new research suggests (New England Journal of Medicine 2012;366:1959). In the double-blind study, 403 patients with unprovoked VTE (ie, without risk factors) who had finished six to 18 months of anticoagulant therapy were randomly allocated to receive aspirin 100mg or placebo daily for two years. The investigators looked at the primary efficacy outcome of recurrent VTE and the primary safety outcome of major bleeding.
