High-dose etoricoxib gives best oral relief for acute pain after surgery

HIGH-DOSE etoricoxib is the most effective single-dose oral analgesic for pain relief after surgery, according to a Cochrane Systematic Review published online earlier this week (7 September 2011). A review of 38 analgesics or analgesic combinations, given as a single dose for acute postoperative pain, revealed that, in rank order, etoricoxib 180-240mg, a combination of oxycodone lOmg and paracetamol l,000mg, etoricoxib 120mg and then ketoprofen 25mg were the most effective and had the lowest (ie, best) number needed to treat (NNT) for at least 50 per cent pain relief over four to six hours compared with placebo.
