Cases of carbapenem resistance identified in UK

Bacteria resistant to carbapenems are widespread in India and have now been identified in UK patients, according to a study published online in The Lancet Infectious Diseases (11 August 2010).Researchers identified isolates of New Delhi metallo-p-lactamase 1 (NDM-1) -positive enterobacteriaceae in India and Pakistan, and investigated importation of the resistant gene into the UK by patients returning from the Indian subcontinent.
