Amitriptyline or pregabalin should be used as first-line treatment for neuropathic pain, according to new guidance from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence. However, for patients with diabetic neuropathy, oral duloxetine should be used as first-line treatment, or amitriptyline where duloxetine is contraindicated.
