As manufacturers get pressure from those holding the purse strings, they will look at reducing costs in the supply chain, said Adel Al-Saleh, president of IMS Health EME A, at the annual general meeting of the European Association of Pharmaceutical Full-line Wholesalers in Cannes earlier this month. "Cost-cutting is going to be a way of life," he believes. Quantifying the challenges to wholesaling, which include the direct-to-pharmacy distribution model, Mr Al-Saleh warned that focusing on efficiencies, the battle for pharmacies, manufacturer strategy, generic strategy and vertical integration is no longer enough: wholesalers must develop a strategy along the lines of industry dynamics.
