Electronic prescription claiming

I was surprised to read about the degree of errors in prescription reimbursement {PJ, 18 July 2009, p59) by NHS Prescription Services. With the technology available to us these days, I am astounded that an error rate of this magnitude is allowed to continue. Why are prescriptions even handled a third time by NHS Prescription Services when all the necessary information has already been entered manually at the point of dispensing?
