A new year, new horizons and a new agenda for public mental health

On 7 December 2009 the Department of Health launched "New horizons — a shared vision for mental health", its new 10-year strategy for mental health services in England. The strategy supersedes the National Service Framework for Mental Health, which expired at the end of last year. In the 10 years since the NSF was published, mental health services have seen enormous improvements. The World Health Organization has commented that mental health services in England are increasingly seen across Europe as the model to follow.1 It should be noted that the pharmacy profession has made significant contributions to the success of the NSF.
