Pharmacists should be involved in pricing policies, said Hans Hogerzeil, director of the World Health Organization's medicines programme. Dr Hogerzeil was speaking about the health challenges that face the developed world, focusing on the increasing medicines costs faced by high and middle income countries, which occur mainly as a result of new medicines. "This makes the selection of medicines and price setting for reimbursement ever more important," he said. Pharmacists who get involved in pricing policies, however, should represent the interests of patients, not their own interests or other commercial interests," he added.
