Andrew Cairns, Veterinary Pharmacy Group (VPG) chairman, said that, as with many branches of the pharmacy profession, there were generalist and specialist elements to veterinary pharmacy practice. It was the current view that the dispensing of veterinary prescriptions and supplying over-the-counter medicines for pets (mainly cats and dogs) were gerieralist activities requiring competence from all community pharmacies. Mr Cairns told the audience there was a view within the VPG that some schools of pharmacy may not be preparing their graduates adequately in this respect.
