Proton pump inhibitors do not improve asthma control in patients who do not have frequent symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux, a study published last week in The New England Journal of Medicine suggests (2009; 360:1487).The parallel-group, double blind trial randomly assigned adult patients, who had inadequately controlled asthma despite the use of moderate- or high-dose inhaled corticosteroids and minimal or no symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux, to receive either 40mg of esomeprazole twice daily or a matching placebo.
