Folic acid and vitamin B_(12) linked with cancer

Treatment with folic acid and vitamin B_(12) is associated with an increased risk of cancer and death in patients with ischaemic heart disease, according to a new study (JAMA 2009;302:2119). Researchers from Haukeland University Hospital in Norway analysed the results from two Norwegian trials involving patients with ischaemic heart disease where there was a statistically non-significant increase in cancer incidence. In the two trials, a total of 6,837 patients were treated with B vitamins or placebo between 1998 and 2005. A follow up through to December 2007 was then conducted.
