Incident reporting to be compulsory from April

Reporting of patient safety incidents to the National Patient Safety Agency is to become mandatory for NHS organisations in England from April 2010.Currently NHS healthcare providers report patient safety incidents voluntarily to the NPSA. However, when NHS providers register with the Care Quality Commission in 2010 reporting will become mandatory. A protocol to share patient safety information is being developed by the two organisations so that incidents do not have to be reported twice.
