Pharmacists are responsible for ensuring that drug use is safe and effective. .Wherever practicable, medicines are used in line with their product licences, in order to ensure that risks to patient safety are minimised. Medicines should not be used in an unlicensed manner unless and until the formulation's quality and fitness for purpose have been assessed by a suitably competent pharmacist. However, licensed preparations may be inappropriate for the end user, for example, patients may not be able swallow tablets or capsules. Therefore, unlicensed oral liquid medicines are extemporaneously prepared in dispensaries in order to meet the needs of specific patient groups.
