WORLD EXPORT COMMITMENTS FOR 1995/96

World export commitments for 1995/96 rose by an estimated 500,000 tons between mid-March andmid-May 1996 andreached 6.1 million tons. An additional 300,000 tons still have to be committed for 1995/96 to meet projected exports of 6.4 million tons. 1995/96 world export commitments are 250,000 tons lower than at the same time in 1994/95. World export commitments for 1994/95 as of mid-May 1995 were 170,000 tons greater than actual exports of 6.2 million tons during the season; some shipments, mostly US,were completed during 1995/96 and have been incorporated into 1995/96 commitments. The major reasons for the over-commitment in 1995/96 were a surge in import demand by China (Mainland) and an inadequate world supply of cotton, which led to record prices and necessitated the rescheduling of some shipments into this season.
