Argentina Cotton Industry: Situation And Perspectives

Situation: Sowing acreage has increased 54% during 1992 to 1996. Unitary yields increased 14%, with a top of 536 kg (1182 pounds of lint) per hectare, crop 1994/95. The same period shows the following changes: exports increased from 120,000 tons to 300,000 tons and local consumption declined 31%. The increase in sowing area is due to medium and large producers. They also adopted technology, management capacity, and working capital. Traditional producers expanded and new ones started.
