Production Fluctuations Are Cause For Concern

India is one of the major cotton producing countries in the world. The area under cotton in India is the largest and constitutes nearly one-fourth of the world cotton area. It employs about seven million farmers. Cotton accounts for more than 70% of the total fiber consumption in the textile sector in India. The textile sector accounts for 20% of the industrial production and for 38% of the total exports of the country. Cotton, therefore, plays a dominant role in the agrarian and industrial economy of India.
