Fetal exposure to magnesium sulphate before anticipated early preterm delivery does not reduce the combined risk of moderate or severe cerebral palsy or death, new data show (New England Journal of Medicine 2008; 359:895). However, consistent with the results of previous trials, the findings suggest that magnesium sulphate may reduce the risk of moderate or severe cerebral palsy among surviving children, the researchers say.
