Pharmacists play a vital role in patient safety, but in many countries of the world, including the United Kingdom, there is a short-age of pharmacists. Pharmacists, therefore, need help to create an environment that will enhance the safety of medicines use. Speakers at a pharmacy practice symposium entitled "Pharmacists, technicians and machines" on 3 September discussed the role of dispensing technicians and automation in helping to ensure patient safety.
