REVISION OF COTTON STOCK ESTIMATES IN CHINA (MAINLAND)

The Secretariat projects the gap between Chinese domestic cotton production and consumption at 3.8 million tons in 2006/07, slightly higher than in 2005/06 (3.7 million tons). However, over the first nine months of 2006/07 China (Mainland) imported half the amount imported in the same period last season (1.6 million tons compared to 3.1 million tons). The Secretariat projects that China (Mainland) will import 2.8 million tons during 2006/07, or one-third less than last season.
