Uzbekistan Begins Modernization Project: 80 million doolar project includes HVI classing systems, seed improvement

Modernization of the Uzbekistan cotton marketing and production sectors formally begins in January. It will be fully operational for the 1996 crop. The long awaited project, in the planning process for the past five years, is being funded by a loan from the World Bank that could reach or exceed 80 million dollar. About half of this, 40 million dollar, will be in international currency, with the remaining being local currency. The project's goal is to reduce land area which Uzbekistan devotes to cotton while maintaining current production levels. Such an increase in yields will allow for land, water, and other resources to be used to increase food grain and feed grain production in the Republic.
