The economic reforms and the trade policy liberalizations carried out during the last four years with a view to globalizing the Indian economy have exposed the Indian cotton textile industry to a new challenge. On one hand the industry is faced with aquota limitation in the international market, and on the other the domestic market has been thrown open to the onslaught of foreign competition. For so long, the industry cocooned in a sheltered domestic market and was not so mindful about quality for domestic consumption despite the Cotton Control (Amendment) Order.
