An 8-day-old girl delivered by caesarean section to an HIV-negative mother after an uneventful pregnancy was brought to the Complexe Pediatrique in Bangui, Central African Republic, in March, 2011, with a 3-day history of fever (38 ? 5°C). The baby had a history of intubation and mechanical ventilation at birth due to asphyxia, after which she spent 2 days in hospital. At admission, she was irritable, feeding poorly, had a witnessed seizure, and had lost 1-5 kg of her birthweight (4-5 kg). Blood smears for malaria were negative. A lumbar pucture was done, after which empirical antimicrobial therapy with IV ceftriaxone and gentamicin was started.Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was cloudy and showed hypoglycorrhachia, hyperproteinorachia, and polymorpho-nudear pleocytosis. A few gram-negative bacilli were noted on direct microscopy. CSF was incubated on Columbia agar plates with 5% (v/v) defibrinated sheep blood at 37°C under aerobic conditions. After 24 h, smooth, circular, yellow-coloured colonies were seen, which were positive for oxidase and catalase. The API 20NE system strip (BioMerieux, Marcy-l'Etoile, France) identified the strain as Elizabethkingia mmingoseptica. This species has been sporadically described as a cause of nosocomial neonatal meningitis, especially during the first weeks of life.
