The Royal College of Physicians doesn't do it. Nor does the Academy of Medical Sciences. Both organisations make immensely important contributions to the strength of medicine and science in the UK. Britain would be considerably poorer without them. But neither has what the Roya! College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) has—an annual research-driven meeting over 3 days that brings together members of all ages, specialties, and interests. This year's RCPCH meeting was held in Glasgow, together with the European Paediatrics Association. How many biomedical conferences do you attend that begin with an opening lecture of passionate advocacy for the rights of patients? Tarn Baillie, Scotland's Commissioner for Children and Young People, argued that his role was to promote the Convention on the Rights of the Child. He set out four "basic principles" for those working in child health.
