Legionnaires' disease associated with a car wash installation

On Sept 4, 2012, an 81-year-old man with a history of cardiovascular disease (living with a cardiac pacemaker) was admitted to a Dutch hospital, with high fever and shortness of breath. Chest radiography showed areas of consolidation in both lungs and confirmed the diagnosis of pneumonia. A positive Legionella pneumophila urinary antigen test, and an L pneumophila serogroup 1 strain isolated from respiratory secretion, confirmed the diagnosis of Legionnaires' disease. The patient recovered after treatment with oral ciprofloxacin (9 days, 500 mg twice daily), and left the hospital after 24 days, on Sept 28, 2012.
