Complementary approaches to estimation of the global burden of diabetes

Estimates of the global, regional, and national prevalence of diabetes were produced for 2008 by the Global Burden of Metabolic Risk Factors of Chronic Diseases Collaborating Group (GBMRF),1 by use of innovative Bayesian hierarchical modelling. The group was critical of previous methods of estimating the global prevalence of diabetes used by both WHO and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF).23 We wish to draw attention to the latest IDF approach, which addresses some of the earlier criticisms.
