In response to Guo-You Zhang and colleagues, the psychological outcomes of reconstructive surgery are subject to ongoing assessment. Although some researchers have described cases of post-traumatic stress disorder, together with anxiety and affective disorders, in women who have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM),12 in a case-control study,3 Andro and colleagues found very few differences between African women who had and had not undergone FGM in terms of mood and anxiety disorders.
