Self-collection of vaginal specimens for HPV testing

Eduardo Lazcano-Ponce and colleagues (Nov 26, p 1868)1 report that, in a Mexican population, self-collected Qiagen hybrid capture 2 (HC2) tests for human papillomavirus (HPV) achieved slightly higher coverage rates (98%) than did clinician-collected cytology (87%), and showed higher sensitivity but lower specificity. By contrast, clinician-collected cytology performed with equal sensitivity to clinician-collected HC2 in China2 and India,3 and with higher specificity.A cause of such seemingly paradoxical results is that real-world obstacles to programmatic success involve people and processes far more than technology.
