Alys Cole-King: a pioneer of suicide mitigation in the UK.

"If I have saved a life", says Alys Cole-King, "then it's as much to do with my compassion as my psychiatric skills". As a medical student at Cardiff University, Cole-King wrote and acted in plays for the local Sherman Theatre and examined issues of stigma and imbalances of power. She continues to explore these themes as a founder of the Open Minds Alliance Community Interest Company, which aims to support individuals and groups "disadvantaged or let down by poor access to critical services", and in her work with the Royal Colleges of Psychiatrists and General Practitioners, Samaritans, PAPYRUS, the Welsh Government, the Mental Health Advisory Board of the College of Medicine, and the UK All Party Parliamentary Suicide and Self-harm Prevention Group. Despite these numerous activities, she continues to work day-to-day as a liaison psychiatrist in North Wales.
