Mariel Finucane and colleagues used population-representative data on measured weight and height from 199 countries and territories to estimate national, regional, and worldwide trends in body-mass index (BMI) in adult men and women from 1980 to 2008. They found an increase in mean BMI in all regions worldwide; in 2008, an estimated 146 billion adults were overweight (BMI >=25 kg/m~2), including 500 million who were obese (BMI >=30 kg/m~2). Estimated prevalences for higher BMI categories, however, were not reported.
